We absolutely love the Open Data movement. We are strong believers that we can collectively as a group make the right choices for our society and change positively the life of every citizen.
Even tough an incredible amount of data are publicly available it is still quite hard to find the right dataset in the right format with the relevant documentation.
We want to improve this situation and help to get closer to a simple and frictionless searching experience. This will accelerate innovative innovations and drive better decisions based on data
We analysed the current version of search.gov.au and identify the key issues we want to solve in order to improve user experience.
We focused on implementing new features such as:
- autocomplete to suggest best keywords based on the initial inputs from the user
- dynamic results to provide relevant documents while the user is still typing his/her request
- single page application to help the user to focus on his/her query and get all the information he/she needs in one go
- mock-up of chatbot functionality to provide personalised assistance to the user
How can open government data to improve responsers' situational understanding and ability to plan their response, and share their information between agencies? How can sharing information between agencies be improved by different information presentation, allowing more informed decisions during domestic emergencies or national security events?
We are seeking to challenge the status quo. Moving from open data as a bi-product of government business, to active management of open data to better support reuse and innovation – hence open data with a purpose. To achieve this we want to trigger a conversation between developers and the data custodians.
How should NSW government best provide data to the developer community? Show how our data can be made more usable for developers. What quality or format or standardisation issues does government need to fix or to consider? What developer community needs does the government need to support better?
How can open data be presented on search.data.gov.au to make it easier and friendlier to use? Does this mean making it more similar to using standard search engines, like Google, or something else entirely?
How can open data be used to make a social impact, contributing to the betterment of society? How can we improve prospects for children, and education, using open data?
What sort of impact can be made on homelessness, mental health outcomes, or the environment, using open data?
