Make Darwin the coolest city around

Jurisdiction: Northern Territory

Both locals and visitors have many reasons to love Darwin, and a big reason being for its tropical weather. The Darwin climate is perfect for engaging in recreational activities on the water and in the outback. However, this same weather makes it difficult to enjoy visits into the Darwin CBD.

Temperatures in the city have been recorded as being higher than surrounding areas; this is possibly due to the presence of heat-absorbing carparks, roads and concrete. Feedback from our community showed cooling in Darwin city as a key priority in improving liveability.
This challenge requires competitors to submit solutions to Darwin CBD’s temperature problem, consequently making activities and life in the city more enjoyable. Which areas in the city need cooling the most? Can the installation of smart shading or planting of additional greenery reduce temperatures? Which are the best routes through the city to avoid problematic areas?
